History
The story of the Keystone Company's coffee and spice trade is the oldest in San Jose business annuals. It dates back over 150 years to the long forgotten Eagle coffee and Spice Mills. Munro-Fraser's History of Santa Clara County, published in 1881, states these mills were started in 1867 and called Barrett, Caswell & Hunt. Their first location was 373 Santa Clara Street (now about 81 E. Santa Clara Street). The record for the next three years is incomplete. But the city directory of 1871 shows that the Caswell had left the firm and C.R. Barrett and Charles A. Hunt were the only proprietors. There is also indication that Hunt's original interest was a side one. The 1870 directory listed him as a dealer in poultry, game, etc. In 1874, the directory mentioned Barrett and Hunt's Mills for the first time as the Eagle Coffee and Spice Mills, a popular name that prevailed even in legal documents and property descriptions.
