Established in 1850, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff s Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that prevents crime, protects residents lives and their property and suppresses criminal activity. It employs a staff of more than 700 full- and part-time sworn officers and over 200 civilians and community volunteers. The department operates a jail that provides detention facilities for pretrial, sentenced and work release inmates. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff s Department provides a range of community services, such as house checks, crime prevention programs and concealed weapon permits. With a location in Solvang, Calif., it also maintains a communication center that responds to calls for police, fire and emergency medical assistance.
