The 1947 Partition Archive is a community-based archive in Berkeley, CA that is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and sharing the oral histories of witnesses of the 1947 Partition in South Asia. Since its establishment in 2010, the Archive has recorded over 10,500 witness oral histories from 14 countries in more than 36 languages and dialects, along with digital copies of photographs, documents, and personal objects of historical significance.
Through the efforts of citizen historians and interns, the Archive aims to ensure that the history of the Partition, which resulted in the formation of modern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, is not forgotten. The Archive is funded by community members and institutional donors, and offers various programs and resources, including a podcast, library of books, and events exhibits, to engage and educate the public about this globally disruptive event.
