Named after the mythological half-dragon who sired Confucius, Kirin Brewery of America is a subsidiary of Kirin Brewery Company, an Asian beer production company. The brewery has also expanded into liquors, wines and soft drinks. Recently, Kirin has branched out into pharmaceuticals, agribio and yeast-related businesses, restaurants and other food service outlets, engineering and information services. The company encompasses approximately 15 breweries, two hop centers, a pharmaceutical plant, four research laboratories and nearly 20 regional sales offices. Additional subsidiaries include Budweiser Japan, Heineken Japan, Kirin Seagram, Kirin Beverage, Yokohama Arena and Kinki Coca-Cola Bottling Company. In 1997, the American division opened a brewing facility with Anheuser-Busch in California. Kirin Brewery of America is located in Torrance, Calif.
