The Florida Department of Transportation supports the Geotechnical Engineering Program, which develops and implements design policy, procedures, standards and training to ensure a safe, economical and high quality transportation system. It administers the Pedestrian and Bicycle Program, which aims to promote conditions for safe and effective travel by foot and bicycle in Florida. The department has contracted with governmental agencies to develop, design, acquire and construct transportation facilities. The Florida Department of Transportation s safety office provides policy, planning, technical and funding expertise, as well as coordinates the development and dissemination of information about walking and cycling safety. Its coverage areas include Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor and Union counties in Florida.
