The Department of Human Resources, founded in 1972, provides more than 80 health and welfare programs. It is one of the largest agencies in Georgia government, operating through over 19,000 employees. It serves all Georgia citizens through regulatory inspection, direct services and financial assistance programs. The department has several divisions, including aging services; public health, developmental disabilities and addictive diseases; and family and children s services. The department manages programs that control the spread of disease, enable older people to live at home longer, prevent children from developing lifelong disabilities and protect children from abuse and neglect. It also provides programs that include a variety of financial and nonfinancial support to families, training single parents to find and hold jobs, and helping people with mental and physical disabilities to work in community.
