The United States Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency with headquarters in Washington, D.C., and more than 150 offices throughout the United States. It is the one of the oldest investigative law enforcement agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The agency, established in 1865, suppresses the counterfeiting of U.S. currency, coins and financial obligations. The United States Secret Service enforces counterfeiting statutes to preserve America s financial infrastructure. It also protects national and visiting foreign leaders, as well as undertakes criminal investigations. The agency s investigative responsibilities also include crimes that involve financial institution fraud, cyber and telecommunications fraud, false identification documents, access device fraud, identity theft, electronic funds transfers and money laundering. With an office in Atlanta, the United States Secret Service also offers specialized services for designation and coordination of national specialty security events.
