University's Westwood facility offers residents a comfortable environment designed to enhance their self-image and preserve their personal dignity. This 149-bed facility on University's Evans campus features 13 private rooms and 38 semi-private rooms in the main facility. Separate dining areas allow more independent residents to eat together unassisted while those who need extra assistance share their own dining room. All living rooms, near nurses' stations, are furnished with traditional furniture in keeping with Westwood's homelike atmosphere. An alarm system specially designed for wandering residents is installed on all exit doors. A control system at each door continually transmits a radio signal around the protected area. Residents prone to wander wear a small radio-frequency bracelet that signals the control unit when they walk into the range of the protected area. WESTWOOD'S ALZHEIMER'S UNIT Fifty percent of Westwood's residents have Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia that results in cognitive impairments. Westwood's separate Alzheimer's Unit is the only facility in this area that provides this level of care for people with Alzheimer's Disease. This special unit allows caregivers to specifically focus their care plans and group activities on the special needs of these patients.
