Galena-Stauss Hospital & Healthcare Center was founded in 1962 as Northwest Illinois Community Hospital. Galena-Stauss Hospital & Healthcare Center operates as a nonprofit, municipal corporation hospital district, and is governed by a nine-member board of directors. The facility comprises a 25-bed critical access hospital, 57-bed skilled nursing facility, 24-apartment assisted living center, adult day care center and a physical therapy and fitness center. Its department of emergency medicine serves patients suffering from cardiac problems, including heart attacks, injuries from vehicular accidents and as the result of falls, broken bones and other orthopedic problems that result from minor or serious accidents. The emergency department also provides its services for asthma and other breathing emergencies, severe pain and bleeding, poisoning, psychiatric problems and injuries caused by domestic and other types of violence.
