Nippersink Forest Preserve, previously a seasonal retreat, now stands as a year-round sanctuary for both humans and wildlife alike. With 329 acres of land, this preserve offers a variety of activities such as hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, and nature observation.
Visitors can explore 3.2 miles of trails that wind around scenic lakes, old oak trees, woodlands, wetlands, and marshes. Shoreline restoration efforts and improved fish habitats make Nippersink an excellent spot for fishing. The preserve also features five picnic shelters, perfect for gatherings and special outings.
Portions of Nippersink are recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory for its rare communities, species, and high-quality natural areas. The site's landscape, including wetlands, marshes, woodlands, and ponds, attracts a diverse bird population. Acquired in stages since 2002, the preserve's history dates back to the 1960s when its lakes were formed.
