The Vermillion County Sheriff's Department preserves peace, protects lives and property, deters criminal activities and safeguards civil rights. It employs several jail officers who handle legal considerations, such as criminal intake and release, jail security, medical aid, suicide prevention, abnormal behavior, stress management, and admissions and bookings. The department has a communication center that responds to various police, fire, and medical emergency and nonemergency cases. It conducts several work programs for inmates that help to promote work habits and lessen unnecessary medication use. The department maintains a merit board that hears cases against merit officers and approves operating rules and regulations.
