The Washington Park Zoo is more than just a zoo we are also a sanctuary that provides a safe home for dozens of rescued wild and domestic animals. Touring the zoo is the perfect way to spend the day and get to know the charming animal residents, including bears, wolves, otters, monkeys, birds, raptors, cougars, reptiles, amphibians, and many more. Since 1928, the WPZoo has been located on the southern shoreline of beautiful Lake Michigan and has been a rescue for animals. Some have been “exotic pets” that proved to be too wild, confiscated as illegal and there are some native wildlife that have suffered injuries that would make life in the wild impossible. We invite you to stroll the natural hillside terrain, and meandering tree-covered pathways, and explore the historical WPA (Works Progress Administration) structures that enhance your visit as you discover the wonders of the natural world.
