Founded in 1939, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, also known as OCME, performs autopsy and issues death certificate. The office investigates the cause of death in cases that fall under its jurisdiction. It is governed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), which works to protect, promote and improve the health and well being of the citizens of Maryland. It is comprised of public and private hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and home health care and hospice centers. The department also works to protect citizens from the threat of communicable diseases, tainted foods and dangerous products. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene additionally regulates health care providers, facilities and organizations. It is located in Baltimore.
