The United States Social Security Administration is a government organization providing supplemental income and benefits for citizens meeting eligibility requirements. Eligible recipients include citizens who retire, citizens who are disabled and widows and children of deceased citizens. Benefits available include supplemental income and health benefits through the Medicaid Program. The SSA is headed by a Commissioner and has a staff of more than 65,000 employees within an organizational structure of 13 offices. The field organization, which is decentralized to provide services at the local level, includes 10 regional offices, six processing centers and approximately 1,300 field offices. The administration was founded in 1935 by President Roosevelt.
