Western Carolina University, founded in 1889 and located in Cullowhee, N.C., is a coeducational residential public university within the University of North Carolina System. The university is spread over more than 600 acres. It is home to more than 8,500 students from the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. It offers more than 120 majors and concentrations for undergraduates, and over 30 graduate-level programs of study. The campus has 13 residence buildings, including one for graduate students and one for married students. It has a library that has more than 700,000 books and bound periodicals, over 1.5 million microfilm units, and more than 23,000 e-books.
