Founded in 1865, the Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from the organization each year through a range of social services, such as provision of food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing/shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children.
