Atmos Energy, the largest pure natural gas distributor in the United States, delivers natural gas to more than 3.1 million residential, commercial, industrial and public-authority customers. Its regulated utility services are provided to more than 1,500 communities in 12 states. For the fiscal year ended September 2004, its utility operations contributed about 73 percent of its consolidated net income. Atmos Energy has grown from 279,000 customers in 1983 mainly by acquiring utility assets. The most recent acquisition was the distribution and pipeline operations of TXU Gas Company, the largest natural gas utility in Texas. Atmos Energy is also the largest natural gas distributor in Louisiana and Mississippi.
