Located in Alexandria, Va., the Code Enforcement Bureau collaborates with building owners, design professionals, contractors and developers to ensure public health, safety and welfare for various new, existing and renovated commercial and residential buildings. It organizes a variety of public education programs related to the Commonwealth of Virginia s Uniform Statewide Building Code and the Fire Prevention Code. The Code Enforcement Bureau maintains a permit processing unit that processes several construction permits, the certificates of occupancy, elevator certificates, fire prevention permits, citizens complaints and manages property construction records. The bureau s plan review unit works with planning & zoning, transportation & environmental services, and parks & recreation departments to ensure emergency access and fire department connections for new mid- and high-rise building developments.
