Founded in 1853, Mount Vernon Ladies' Association is one of the most popular historic estates in America. Based in Mt Vernon, Va., it is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country. The estate, gardens and farm of Mount Vernon Ladies' Association totaled some 8,000 acres in the 18th century. The estate also includes a museum, the tombs of George and Martha Washington, Washington's greenhouse, memorial to the accomplishments of 18th-century slaves, as well as a collection, which features numerous decorative and domestic artifacts.
