Located in Milwaukee, WIC Programs is a federal grant program for which the Congress authorizes a specific amount of funding each year. It is administered at the federal level by the Food and Nutrition Service Department. Additionally, it is administered by more than 90 WIC state agencies, through approximately 46,000 authorized retailers. The WIC Program is a special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care. WIC Programs operates through more than 2,000 local agencies in over 10,000 clinic sites, 50 state health departments, 30 Indian Tribal Organizations, the District of Columbia and several territories. Its territories include the northern Marianas Islands, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. WIC Programs services are provided in county health departments, hospitals, mobile clinics, community centers and schools.
